History
Settlement in the area that is now Belmont started in the 1750s around a fort built due to hostilities with the Native American Cherokee Tribe. The original name of the community was Garibaldi Station, but it was changed to Belmont in 1883 in honor of August Belmont, a prominent New York banker. Beginning in the 1850s, Belmont turned into a mill town, and its motto became “The City of Diversified Textiles,” although the last of the family-owned mills, R.L. Stowe Mills Inc., closed in 2009. Belmont has actively worked to preserve its historical buildings, and the Belmont Historical Society works towards “preserving the past for the sake of the future”.
